dc.description.abstract | This study was undertaken in an attempt to gaining an understanding of the hydrological processes in the humid zones of Tanzania. A particular reference or attention was made to the parts of rainfall-runoff and evaporation processes. By use of rainfall data, temperature data and literature on the definition of humid tropic zones, five different and isolated regions were identified. Three number conceptual rainfall- runoff models were adopted for use in the study and applied on three catchments selected from the five regions. The models were found to have worked generally but not to the level of expectation. The continuation of the study involved the use of a deduced catchment water balance model, Penman's and Morton's models to determine and compare the extent of evaporation in the humid zones. The result as obtained from the plot of water balance losses against rainfall revealed that high proportion of rainfall is lost through evaporation. The Penman's and the Morton's models were generally found to even estimate higher than the water balance model. These confirm the major role of evaporation in the humid tropic zones. The unsatisfactory results from the rainfall-runoff modelling do not deny the use of conceptual models in the humid zones. This might be due to the technique used in estimating the areal rainfall and the data inadequacies. | en_US |
