This research aims at development and testing of a systematic approach to investigate the potential need of new engineering products. It involves the determination of the factors which cause failure of the engineering products in the market. The aim of this work is that many of the locally manufactured engineering products diffuse slowly or fail in the market or ends up in prototype stage due to improper approach used during launching process of new engineering product. Methodologies used were physical survey of the study area, observation, interviews and structured questionnaire. The methods help to develop and test a systematic approach to investigate the potential need of new engineering product. The results indicate that 71.4% of the new engineering products fail at the commercialization stage. The use of old and obsolete technology account for 17.9% of engineering products to fail in the market. Other factors are poor quality, lack of marketing skills, lack of capital and high competition which account for 82.1%. The approaches used to investigate the need of engineering products are not compatible to all types of engineering products. It can be concluded that modern technology must be used in the manufacturing of engineering products to ensure good quality. Companies should invest in the commercialization stage where most of their manufactured products fail in the market. It is recommended that the manufacturers of the engineering products should involve in the research and development of the new engineering products. The engineering product markets should be technologically driven in order to capture the competitive market. Also it is recommended that the engineering products manufactured should be categorized according to the nature and use before launching into the marketen_US
