Abstract
Although there are many career opportunities in the world of work, some people or groups have been historically inclined to specific careers. The present study investigated the psychological determinants of career choice among young people in Kuria community. Specifically, this study assessed the level of knowledge of identification of various careers among young Kuria males, and the relationships between perceived behavioral controls, pressure from significant others, attitude and their intention to join army career. A questionnaire was completed by 258 Kuria male students (M=18.05 years, SD=1.03) from the five selected secondary schools in Tarime district. Focus group discussions were adopted the questionnaire. This study revealed that young Kuria males had better knowledge on identifying various careers in the world of work. The study has also revealed Pbc, Pso, and attd all to have a significant strong positive correlation [r = 60, p<. 0.1, r=. 61, p<.0.1 and r=. 8.1, p<. 0.1] respectively with the intention of young Kuria males to join army career. Similarly, standard multiple regression analysis reported attd as the strongest predicator on the intention. Pso second and Pbc as the weakest (beta values of, 57, p, 0005, 21, p<00005.18, p<0005). In summary respondents had better knowledge on various careers and all the three independent variables made a unique and a statistically significant contribution to the prediction of intention? Hence, explanation and the description of Kuria males with army career should also pay attention to the established relationships. Longitudinal study is recommended for in depth understanding of the cause and effect relationship
