Emission of air pollutants from the energy sector in Tanzania

Abstract
This study was undertaken to develop an inventory for key air pollutants from the Energy Sector (combustion and fugitive emissions) in Tanzania. The types of fuels considered in the study were petroleum, coal, natural gas charcoal and wood. The sub-sectors covered were energy industries, manufacturing and construction industries and residential (households) sector. The major components of inventory were activity data and emission factors data. Activity data were obtained from both governmental and non-governmental organizations dealing with energy related activities using informal interviews and checklists, and used emissions inventory workbook template. Appropriate emissions factor data were calculated or taken from IPCC standard data tables and APINA workbook. The emission calculations were carried out using IPCC workbook (for CO2, N20 and CH4) and APINA (SEI) Excel Workbook (for NH3, PM10, PM2.5, NMVOC's, SO2, NOx and CO). Generally emissions trend was observed to increase with different magnitude for each air pollutant from 1995 to 2004. Carbon dioxide showed the highest growth rate, in year 2004 due to start-up of Songas project in July 2004. The natural gas from Songas Ubungo power station was the source of the observed dramatic jump of CO2 emissions in the year 2004 ( 2.4 x 1 06Gg) compared to the base year 2000 ( 0.6 x 103Gg).
