dc.description.abstract | The investigation whose results are reported in this Thesis involved essential oil composition analyses of some Tanzanian indigenous plant species in order to establish baseline scientific information on their potential as a contribution towards evolving an essential oil industry in Tanzania. The oil content of the leaves, stem wood, and stem and root bark of some Uvariodendron and Uvaria species (Annonaceae), some other diverse Annonaceae species and plant species belonging to essential oil producing families, was determined. The results indicated that the root bark from Uvaria faulknerae, U. scheffleri, Uvariodendron pycnophyllum, Vepris trichocarpa, Artabotrys modestus and an unidentified Uvariodendron species, and stem wood of Osyris lanceolata contained the highest amount of oil. There were seasonal as well as geographical variations in the essential oil content of some of the plants. GC-MS analysis indicated linalool, eugenol, methyl eugenol and elemicin to be the major constituents of several oil samples from Uvariodendron species, while benzyl benzoate was the main constituent of most Uvaria species. Furthermore, more of the oil samples exhibited antifungal rather than antibacterial activity. Most of the oil samples showed weak antioxidant, protease, protease inhibition and cytotoxic activity. Others exhibited significant larvicidal activities, the U. gorgonis leaf oil also showing strong mosquito repellency. In general, these results indicated some of the investigated plant species to have yielded essential oils of potential commercial value, for which in-depth research is required as a process towards establishing an essential oil industry in Tanzania. | en_US |
