In diesel engine, there is a tendency for the engine not to achieve a steady idling speed. Under this situation the engine tends to either race or stall as a result of poor and incorrect metering of the fuel, which is required for the combustion process~taking place during engine operation. Engine stalling or racing during idling speed is a result of rough or incorrect engine idling speed tuning and if severe, the engine will stop firing completely. This research is focused on the diesel engine governing mechanism (the governor). The governor of a diesel engine plays a key role in the control of the idling speed and maximum speed of an engine that is achieved by adjusting the amount of fuel supplied to the engine. In order to be able to establish and select the engine parameters for optimum operation, the engine, governor and tachometer are represented in form of mathematical models and a simulation study was conducted by solving the system’s differential equations using a fourth order Runge-Kutta numerical integration method written in C code computer programs. Results on the simulation study made indicate the speed governor parameters chosen gave satisfactory results. The obtained results provide information needed to improve design features of existing mechanical engine governors including that at low speeds.en_US
