Abstract
Hydropower is one of renewable energy sources that results from moving water over a certain head to produce power by use of turbines. However, human activities have consumed more water, which resulted in partial loading of water into hydro turbines. Water flows through hydro turbines do not match the installed design capacity. This research identifies the impact of partial loading of hydropower turbines on plant performances at Nyumba ya Mungu and Hale hydropower stations. Primary data was collected through physical measurements and secondary data through recording. Physical measurements of noise intensity, power generated, turbine discharges, head and water levels in the reservoir for the two sites were conducted. Data obtained was analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2007. Power with varying discharges, the efficiency curves, normal and critical cavitations factors were computed. The results show a drop of 30% turbine efficiency at Nyumba ya Mungu and 4% at Hale station. The rating loss of 534.9 MWh for single turbine, and 2,299.6 MWh for two turbines at Nyumba ya Mungu and the rating loss of 1700.16 MWh for single turbine and 10,520.16 MWh for two turbines at Hale power station was experienced. The two hydropower station‟s turbines have developed cavitation. From the research, partial loading lead to turbine underperformance. Efficiency can be enhanced by promoting land, forest resources and water use policy improvements
