dc.description.sponsorship | This study was carried out to investigate the effectiveness of non-project tree farming in environmental management and poverty alleviation. The study was carried out in Mtili and Ikongosi villages in Ifwagi ward of Mufindi District. Purposive sampling was employed in selecting two villages with no tree related projects. The study involved 118 respondents who were identified through simple random sampling. Data collection involved observation techniques, household interviews, Focus Group Discussions (FGD) and key informant interview. The major study findings revealed that, respondents are positive about tree farming practices carried out in their areas. The main trees planted in the study area are pines (Pinus patula) and eucalyptus (eucalyptus saligna) trees. It was also found out that, the non-project tree farming can contribute in environmental management and poverty alleviation. However, the problems mentioned are fire incidences, inadequate land for tree farming activities, lack of credits, inadequate knowledge concerning tree farming particularly local tree seeds collection and extension services. Generally, the study findings suggest the following; since fire is the greatest fear among tree growers, community fire management projects should be initiated. Also, education and training activities specifically on local seed collection, pruning, spacing and thinning should be provided to tree growers. Extension services should be strengthened; the workload for the current extension workers should be minimized. Also, there should be an organized market for tree products. | en_US |
