Abstract
This study aimed at assessing the effectiveness of the anti-corruption strategies for prevention of corruption in the public health services in Ilala District, Dar es Salaam. Its main interest was to establish why corruption still exists in the provision of public health services despite the existence of the anti-corruption strategies in the public health services. The study was guided by three specific objectives namely: to assess and determine the effectiveness of the existing anti-corruption strategies in the public health services in Ilala district, to find challenges in implementing of anti-corruption strategies in public health services in Ilala district; and to suggest the improvement of the strategies for prevention of corruption practices in the health services in Tanzania.A total of 51 respondents participated in the study and the sample comprised patients, health workers, the medical officer in-charge, Ilala Municipal Medical Officer of Health, government officials from the Ministry of Health and the Prevention, and Combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB). This selection of the respondents was done using random and purposive sampling procedures. The study used questionnaires and in-depth interviews as the major techniques of collecting data.The study was conducted at Amana Hospital, Muhimbili National Hospital, Mnazi Mmoja Health Centre and in government offices which included the Ministry of Health and PCCB in Ilala District. The data collected were checked for completeness on a daily basis and then the responses were manually analyzed in a tabular form. The responses which were recorded on tape were transcribed before being analyzed. The study started officially in October 2013 after having processed necessary documents such as ethical clearance and research permit. The results indicated that the rate of corruption in public health services is high and this implies that the existing anti-corruption strategies are not effective that more improvements for the strategies are needed so as to make the strategies effective.
