The research is to analyze the environmental impact of Bujumbura Abattoir on Ntahangwa Area, in Burundi, in terms of human health, water quality, socio- economic aspects and aquatic life in order to propose mitigation measures and an Environmental Management Plan (EMP). To archive this main objective, physical observation, consultations and interviews were done; research questionnaire was completed and three sampling locations were chosen along the river course and abattoir channel for water quality analysis. The choice of location was to reflect the variations in concentrations of the following important parameters of water quality issue. pH , Electrical conductivity (EC), Total Suspended Solids (TSS) , Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Nitrates, Phosphates, Total Coliforms (TC) and Feacal coliforms (FC) among others. Results of analyze revealed impairment in the quality of river Ntahangwa by the untreated effluent from abattoir .abattoir discharges a larger quantity of wastewater(77.85m3 /day ) into Ntahangwa river which adversely impact the environment. Except the pH and Nitrates, the values obtained downstream Ntahangwa River, for the other analyzed parameters are far above the highest permissible values recommended and corroborate the pollution of Ntahangwa River and its vicinity. The current water quality status of Ntahangwa river poses both environmental and health hazards to users (repetitions diseases; and discomfort to the neighboring communities (odour, animals’ noise, etc.). to redress the situation and ensure public health safety, Bujumbura abattoir needs to treat and reuse its wasters. Specific mitigation measures and an appropriate EMP are proposed and also, a schematic layout of Bujumbura abattoir according to its currently environmental situation is proposed.en_US
