Poor quality water, inadequate levels of water and poor environmental sanitation, make the urban poor of Temeke district suffer the debilitating effects of water and sanitation-related diseases like cholera and diarrhea. The study involved the use of key informant interviews, transect walk, focus group discussions and household questionnaires commonly known as the participatory Rapid Appraisal (PRA) methods. It also involved intensive documentary review. The study revealed that Temeke district had increasing cases and deaths of diarrhea, probably caused by faecal contaminated water due to the presence of poorly built traditional pit latrines. Hygiene practices were poor and community’s effort in providing safer and sanitation was dwinding. To increase the water supply, water demand management would suffice. Renovating the non-functional community water kiosks, proper management of the already existing water schemes, and rainwater harvesting from roof catchment at household level. Safer drinking water can be met on a provisional basis by available technologies. Solar water disinfection and the use of seed extracts from Moringa oleifera could be adopted and easily used to beef up the already existing household methods in the community like boiling and simple chlorination (water guard). Use of lined Ventilated Improved Pits and Ecosan latrines could save the ground water sources (boreholes) available in the study area from pollution. Hygiene education in all stages, social mobilization, community participation and behavioural change, are all important in minimizing water and sanitation-related diseases.en_US
