dc.description.abstract | Poor performance in topographical survey often leads to project cost and time overruns. This research is both a case study and opinion research designed to investigate on factors contributing to errors in topographic survey related to road design and construction in Tanzania. The study population included TANROADS, MOW, MLHSD, engineering and surveying firms. The research conducted opinion survey whereby a total of 47 respondents participated in questionnaire survey and fourteen participants participated in focus group discussions. The case study investigated four projects with major cost variations of between 19% and 47% and time variation of up to 38%. The study established that cost variation caused by poor topographical survey is over 50%. The study is concluded by establishing seventeen factors contributing to errors in topographic survey presented in a form of Cause and Effect diagram (Ishikawa diagram) in four main groupings: control points problem, cost problem, staffing and client related problems. In addition, the study established the overall performance of road topographic survey is average. The study therefore recommends that there must be proper establishment of National Control Points; and TANROADS must ensure that proposed staff by consultants must be available during project execution; survey verification must be done before construction, budget improvement for survey work execution and full involvement of the surveyors in highway projects from planning to completion stage. | en_US |
