dc.description.abstractHarnessing of energy from wind presupposes a primary investigation of features of wind speed. In this study wind speed data were obtained from flagged trees found at the study site, they were estimated by Griggs Putnam Deformity (GPID). In situ wind speed data from Shinyanga weather station were compared with satellite data from the European Centre for medium-range weather forecasts (ECMWF). These data were considered at the standard height of 10m Above Ground Level (AGL).Pearson’s Correlation Model (PCM) involved measured in (situ) and satellite data to formulate the Linear Regression Equation (LRE) Y = 0.664 X = 0.652. The correlation coefficient was found to be R = 0.626 with significant level at 0.01. These were used to predict the wind speed data at Bukundi in simiyu Region The overall monthly average of the wind speed evaluated by PCM was found to be 2.86 m/s. Meanwhile, the scale parametric quality c and standard deviation o were 3.23 and 3.21 m/s respectively. The annual average wind speed estimated by GPID and PCM were found to be 5.50 and 2.90 m/s, respectively. These annual averages differed by 61.90% when compared to each other. The latter method was found to be more appropriate than the former and therefore used in the analysis of the data. Vertical variations of wind power density were established by extrapolation from the height of 10 to 80 m in interval of 10m. It was found that the average monthly power density at 10 m AGL ranged from 28.61 and 68.39W/m2. Likewise annual power densities were between 28.61 and 68.39W/m2. The study therefore, concludes that features of the wind speed available at the site are not viable commercially, but suitable for small scale stand-alone wind turbines.en_US
