Abstract
Road sector is crucial for both economic and social development of any country as it is to Tanzania. Albeit its importance, projects aimed at keeping our roads in good condition have been plagued by performance problems. This study focused on the application of Quality Management practices in road construction projects in Tanzania. The methodology adopted included both literature review and field study. The field study involved personal participation at sites, contractors employers and consultants of road projects in Tabora, Katavi and Rukwa regions. The study has established indicators for assessment of application, level and hindrances to adoption of quality management practices. Finally, proposed an assessment framework for application of the quality management in roads projects. The study came up with the key indicators for assessing the adoption of Quality Management practices as well as aspects that are to adopted in Quality Management practices adopted in road construction projects. It further concludes that ERB, CRB and IET to organize professional development programmes to contractors related to Quality Management in road projects. With regards to recommendations, the study recommends that all manuals being used as guidelines during design and construction be updated. Furthermore, TANROADS and LGAs should ensure that project proposals contain a section on how the contractor will apply Quality Management practices to enhance quality of road projects.
