Abstract
This study explored key opportunities and challenges arising from the implementation of REDD+ project and their implications on forest conservation and community livelihoods. The study was conducted in villages adjacent to Duru Haitemba Forest (DHF) in Babati District because the area is potential for REDD+ project implementation based on the experience of Community Based Forest Management (CBFM) since 1990s. The study was conducted in two villages namely, Ayasanda and Duru which are in Babati District. The former has experiences on community benefit for participating in forest management. Both secondary and primary data were obtained and used to address the objectives of this study. Secondary data were collected through documentary review related to the topic under study. On the other hand, primary data were collected through discussion with key informants (n=10), focus group discussion (FGD) with 20 people in all villages purposely selected and also through household (HH) survey with 53 and 40 respondents in Ayasanda and Duru villages respectively, representing 10% of the total number of households per village. The study findings revealed that receiving funds from carbon trade is a major opportunity. This is because the fund will ensure improvement in community‟s livelihoods through the establishment of various infrastructures. On the other hand a major challenge which was mentioned by 14(16.5%) and 25(29.4%) of the respondents in Ayasanda and Duru villages respectively was reduction in access to forest products. These were mainly contributed by restriction imposed in the forest so as to ensure the forest is well managed and conserved. From the findings it was concluded that, implementation of the project should compromise community‟s livelihoods. It is therefore recommended that experience learnt from Kolo Hill forest should be utilized. This will ensure sustainability of the project in Duru Haitemba Forest and other places potentially for REDD+ project.
