Abstract
Semi prefab building technique which combines the insitu and prefab building methods is aimed at reducing the urban total building construction time and cost. This dissertation has particularly considered curved reinforced concrete roof structures for semi prefabrication. A structural analysis and cost weighted material consumption analysis has been conducted on six types of reinforced concrete roofs proposed for a model building derived from a Modular Urban House Concept developed in this dissertation. The Modular Urban House Concept provides a structural and architectural system on which semi prefab building technique can be applied. The Modular Urban House Concept developed here is a structural and architectural concept in which composing parts are similar or alike to facilitate use of a few component design varieties for a large number of building varieties. This ensures a large number of repetitive use of a particular formwork or mould. Systems approach has been used to develop this concept by considering spatial, load bearing and space enclosing systems. Comparison of cost weighted material consumption of the proposed reinforced concrete roof structures shows that steel reinforcement contributes more to the cost weighted material consumption due to its relatively high cost. This means that reducing the amount of steel reinforcements or using an alternative type of reinforcement may lead to considerable reduction in the cost of reinforced concrete roof construction materials.
