Abstract
I must start by congratulating the organizers of this workshop on identifying such an important aspect of environmental management, namely pastoralism and particularly mobile livestock management. One objective of the workshop, one of the most important, is to emphasize mobile pastoralism as the most adapted form of land use in sejni-arid areas, and to counteract the widespread prejudices against pastoralists, largely based on ignorance. I hope that my experience can contribute towards this. Briefly I first became acquainted with mobile pastoralism as District officer in charge, the Loliondo sub-District in August 1934 One of my first duties was to supervise the auctions at Malambo and Ngorongoro, where about 1500 cattle were sold at the former and over 1000 at Munge, the Ngorongoro auction site. The average price was around Shs. 15/= per beast, which was also the current tax rate.
