A computerised method of planning line-of-sight terrestrial microwave transmission systems for broadband signals such as integrated telephone, data and television signals with sound programs for TTCL to replace the tedious and time consuming manual Radio Transmission Planning (RTP) currently in practice is presented. Tasks accomplished in the computer-aided radio transmission planning approach are: (i) Geo-coding of Tanzania administrative map and contour maps for a small portion of Kigoma region to represent a communication channel. (ii) Development of programs to store and display the coded maps on a computer screen. (iii) Organisation of the theoretical background on propagation of microwave signals needed to facilitate development of the software. (iv) Development of software for the design of microwave radio relay links, which interacts with the stored maps to romote visual perception. By entering latitude and longitude coordinates of terminal stations and communication system performance objectives, wave propagation is simulated to determine propagation characteristics from which the specifications for the design, manufacture, supply, installation and commissioning of radio relay communication systems are defined. This entails establishing a communication route, transmission frequency and power coordination, type of antenna, height of antenna towers, azimuth and elevation angles of antennas. This work is confined only to the geo-coding of administrative maps and altitude physical features. Test results for designing a radio relay route between Kigoma and Muhanga are presented.en_US
