| dc.description.abstract | Tanzania joined REDD+ initiative to achieve sustainable forest management and improve people’s livelihoods. Nine REDD+ readiness projects have been established countrywide. This study assessed the impact of these projects in changing community behavior towards forest management, taking experiences from the "Advancing REDD+ in Kolo hills Forest (ARKFor)" readiness project in Kondoa District. Qualitative and quantitative information were collected using PRA techniques that included: household interviews, focus group discussion, key informants and field observations. 174 households were randomly selected for interview in three sampled villages, of Mnenia, Kisese-Disa and Haubi. Quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS and MS Excel computer programs while content analysis technique was used for qualitative information. The study revealed that lack of community involvement, political interference, increased land scarcity, over dependence to natural resources, and poor governance had contributed to people’s negative attitudes towards conservation programmes. REDD+ was more known in the village that rejected the project (91%) than in that which accepted it (48%) connected to political influence and low attendance in awareness meetings. People’s support towards forest management was high (98%) connected to long-term existence of other conservation programmes and organizations such as HADO, KIRDEP, TANAPA and AWF. REDD+ was also misinterpreted because of scientific nature of REDD+ concepts. The study recommends on community involvement, good governance, more awareness, joint efforts by all stakeholders, intensive agriculture and alternative energy sources to make REDD+ a success. | en_US |
