Labour Administration is one of the key functions of the State in Tanzania; there is lack of scholarly work on Labour Administration. Hence, this dissertation is an attempt to provoke thought and stimulate research on the subject matter. The dissertation examines the concept of labour administration and reviews the development of colonial labour administration in Tanzania. The dissertation further reviews the role of the Labour Department during the colonial period and the independence period in Tanzania and its impact on workers. Due to lack of scholarly work on the subject matter, the author has placed much attention to archival as well as literature review on Tanzania legislation and judicial decisions, treaties and commentaries on Indian and UK labour law administration and international labour conventions. The author has also conducted interviews with officials of the Department of Labour, Ministry of Labour, Sports and Youth Development. The most enriching output of this dissertation is that the state's role based on colonial perception on labour administration is not suitable to the social realities of Tanzania. Hence the Tanzanian state should immediately change its role to cope up with the socio- economic conditions of the countryen_US
