dc.description.abstract | The effective operation of all communication networks depends on the quality of its power supply. However, in most parts of Tanzania, electrical power supply is unreliable. For successful operation of Base Transceiver stations (BTSs) most mobile network operators (MNO) and Tower Building Companies (TowerCos) use diesel-driven generators as a means of power backup system which is very expensive; and consequently leading to high operations expenses (OPEX) for the companies. The objective of this study was to explore alternative sources of power that can be used to power BTSs effectively at a cheaper OPEX. In this research a cost benefit analysis of using an alternative source of energy to power BTSs was done. Key data, generator fuel, installation and maintenance costs were collected from various BTS sites of Vodacom Tanzania, also solar and wind power installation and maintenance costs were gathered from various equipment vendors for the analysis. The Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) and Microsoft Excel software packages were used for the analysis. It was found that the cost of investment for wind turbine takes 27% of the total current power investment costs. For solar it was observed that it takes 25%, and generator takes 92% which is very high compared with all alternative sources of power analysed. These findings in this study show that solar power is the most cost effective alternative source to power BTSs. Since MNOs in Tanzania are using about 21,487.68 litres of diesel per annum, they will save more than 5% of their annual revenue for adopting this option. | en_US |
