A model consisting of a channel routing component that uses the Muskingum Model was used to route the flows between Kirua and Hale. The routing model was used to predict the river flow at all the gauging stations downstream of NyM, particularly at Hale and Korogwe, using information of the flows and water abstractions at Kirua. The model was tested using the time series data for nine years (1967-1975). The results of model application showed relatively poor results during the calibration and verification period. To quantify the irrigation water requirements of the Kirua area, CROPWAT program was used for estimation of net irrigation from which gross irrigation was obtained. The return flows were assumed to be 20% of the abstracted flows. To assess the effect of abstraction at Kirua and its impact on the flows at Korogwe and Hale, the model was run under a variety of water withdrawal options at Kirua. The results showed that the reduction in power is experienced in March, May, June and July only. In April the effective rainfall at Kirua is sufficient to supply the rice with its water requirements. The present study can form a basis to start a program of creating awareness, monitoring system and creating the database, for the purpose of improving and properly managing water resources of the Pangani river system and its optimum utilization.en_US
