Abstract
This research was aimed at assessing the types and concentrations of dominant species of airborne pollutants found in the streets of Dar es Salaam city. The study was conducted in nine different sites within the city of Dar es salaam. The sites were divided into three categories based on their daily activities as commercial, residential and industrial. Kariakoo, Mnazi Mmoja and Askari monument (new post office) were grouped as commercial while Magomeni mapipa, Sinza (Mugabe) and Upanga (Muhimbili) were regarded as residential and industrial areas were Chang’ombe, Kurasini and Gerezani. From each of all those sites, samples were determined / measured three times a day i.e. morning, afternoon and evening between June and august of 2010. Results showed four gaseous airborne pollutants SO2, NO2, NO and CO as dominating pollutants in most parts of the city and also revealed PM2.5 and PM10 as a dominating particulate air borne pollutants. Degree of pollution found to vary within sites depending on their daily activities, areas with high traffic densities specifically commercials areas located at the city centre showed elevated levels of pollutants that exceeded the concentrations recommended by WHO. As compared to other studied areas, Kariakoo and Gerezani were found to have higher concentrations of almost all types of airborne pollutants measured in this study. Lower concentrations of airborne pollutants were observed in residential areas located away from the busy roads.
