This study was conducted at Mnazi Mmoja dispensary in Dar es salaam from December, 1987 to January 1988. The main objectives was to measure the prevalence, incidence and effect of chloroquine- induced pruritus on chloroquine utilization in malaria control in Dar es salaam. The study revealed that the size of the problem of chloroquine- induced pruritus was bigger than it had hi therto been thought to be. The prevalence rate of chloroquine-induced pruritus was found to be in the order of 45%while its incidence rate in one month was 27% Chloroquine- induced pruritus wa also found to have a significant negative impact on chloroquine utilization. About 91%of the patients who had the problem of chloroquine- induced pruritus said the reaction was a sufficient deterrent to chloroquine utilization. The same response was obtained among the women interviewed as to the effect of chloroquin-induced pruritus on utilization of chloroquine issued freely at M.C.H. clinics A clinical trial to find out the effectiveness of antihistamines in preventing the itch reaction revealed remarkable findings. It was found that piriton could prevent, effectively, itching due to chloroquine in about 89% of the patients who had history of chloroquine-induced pruritus Piriton was also found to improve compliance to chloroquine utililization among patients with this side- effect up 95%. Therefore, piriton is useful drug in malaria control because of the role I has been found to play in improving compliance to chloroquine utilization (therapeutically and prophylastically) which is an important integral part of any malaria control programeen_US
