dc.description.abstract | The shortage of affordable, reliable and environmentally friendly energy resource for electricity generation has awakened the attempt of energy experts to research on wind energy potential. In this study wind data of Dodoma airport from Tanzania meteorological agent recorded at standard height of 10 m have been analysed in order to establish detailed information on wind characteristics in areas around the site for wind energy applications. The power law equation was used to extrapolate wind speed data from the height of 10 m to 90m in steps of 10 m using power exponent of 0.12. the results show that at 10m height the site has annual mean wind speed of 4.50m/s and corresponding annual mean power and energy density of 55.32w/m2 and 484.99kWh/m2/yr respectively. The trend of increasing in magnitude at each step of extrapolation for wind speed, wind power and energy density is similar for all three parameters. At the height of 90m the annual mean wind speed, power and energy density are respectively 5.86m/s 121.56W/m2 and 1065.71kWh/m2/yr. the results also indicates that the windy season of the year lies in the months of august, September, October and November with respective wind speed of 5.56m/s,6.00m/s 6.17m/s and 5.31m/s. furthermore, the results show that at height of 10m the annual mean shape and scale parameters are 1.93 and4.84 m/s respectively while at height of 90m the mean values are respectively 2.25 and 6.60m/s. the magnitude of wind speed characteristics namely cut-in wind speed, rated wind speed and cut-out wind speed of a wind energy conversion system suitable for the wind climate at the site at a height of 10 mare 2.43m/s, 8.76m/s and 18.20 m/s respectively, while their corresponding values at height of 90m are 2.60m/s, 9.4ms and 19..52m/s respectively. Finally, the results showed that the annual mean wind speed at the height of 50m is 5.44m/s which is sufficient for the purpose of electricity generation. | en_US |
