dc.description.abstractThe finite element method is well known tool for the solution of complicated structural engineering problems as it is capable of accommodating many complexities in the solution. The finite element method involves subdividing the actual structure into a suitable number of sub regions that are called finite elements. The study examined use of eccentric beam element in modelling of slab on Girder Bridge deck. The bridge is normally modelled in different models such as beam plate model, rigid connection model, shell element model and grillage model. The eccentric beam model exploit the use of rigid beam, also referred to as rigid link that transfer forces to the beam located eccentrically from the shell element, the model is compared to traditional models such as shell, beam plate and grillage model. All the models have been tested and results recorded. The eccentric beam model compares very well with the shell, shell-beam and not with the grillage model. Hence the use of eccentric beam element is recommended. The major advantage in this model is the ease in the preparation of the input as it is more accurate and requires less time as compared to the shell-beam and grillage.en_US
