dc.description.abstractThe Nyando River catchment is one of the catchments situated in Kenya in the Lake Victoria South Catchment area. The basin has a huge potential for irrigation development. Currently, the Government of Kenya is venturing into the expansion of existing schemes to stimulate economic growth and reduce poverty within the basin. The Government is also planning to implement Environmental Flow Requirement as stipulated in the Water Act 2002; however, the impacts of these proposed developments on water resources have not been assessed. Based on this, the WEAP model was applied in this study to assess the current situation and to simulate the planned developments scenarios. Crop water requirement was estimated using CROP WAT model and Environmental flow requirement was estimated using Hughes and Munster Desktop Methodology. Simulation of water demand and estimated environmental flows was conducted for a 35 year period Water users identified in the catchment included domestic, livestock, industrial, agricultural and environment water users. Results revealed that the current annual water demand in the basin is 176 Mm3 (Million cubic meters) of which irrigation, urban, rural, livestock and industrial water users constitute 41%, 4.5%, 15%, 35% and 4% respectively. Implementation of the proposed developments will increase the annual demand by 62% and water shortage by 260%. The study has proposed management strategies that may increase water reliability in the catchment for instance increased irrigation efficiency, construction of reservoir and staggering of the cropping program. To totally eliminate water shortages within the catchment, construction of a reservoir with capacity 115Mm3 is recommended.en_US
