The study was conducted to assess the current status of patient dose and image quality by applied international code of practice for dosimetry in diagnostic radiology. Determination of the entrance surface air kerma (ESAK) to patients and image quality using image criteria rating (ICR) were made in five referral Hospitals in Tanzania. The average patient dose during computed radiography (CR) examination of the chest and abdomen values were 0.33 mGy and 3.70 mGy, respectively. The estimated uncertainty in patient dose values was approximately 24%. The effective dose for chest PA ranged from 0.02 mSv to 0.08 mSv while for abdomen AP, ranged from 0.19 mSv to 0.78 mSv. The image quality of radiographs of Phillips FCR Capsula CR-FR- 359 and Phillips PCR Eleva were found to be comparable. However, all facilities seemed to operate at higher tube load values, which can lead to unnecessary patient doses. Inadequate initial training on CR technology explains in large proportion of the inappropriate use of exposure parameters. The tube potential of 70 kVp and tube charge of 5 mAs were found to be optimal values, which can reduce the average patient dose up to s 55% if replaced 72 kVp and 20.8 mAs used routinely at KH.en_US
