An attempt in this project has been made to produce software that can offer an intelligent partnership to designers involved in Mechanical Engineering Design. The major part of the research is centred on establishing the best way of using computer to support the mechanical engineering design activity. To capture the design knowledge software using C/Ctt has been developed. The software consists of the following modules: - Knowledge representation structures based on Ctt object oriented programming - Rules and reasoning mechanism -Means to access and manipulate the properties of design elements at run time. -Graphical user interface. - A link to conventional CAD package (AUTOCAD). The software has been tested on a design problem to the satisfaction of the supervisors at the University of Plymouth. Part of the software evaluation using designers has been done at the University of Plymouth. The additional evaluation is being conducted at the University of Dar es Salam. Regarding the thesis writing up the following chapters have been completed. Chapter 2: Expert systems for mechanical engineering design; Chapter 3: CAD in mechanical engineering and the trend in supporting the design activity; Chapter 4: Knowledge representation; Chapter: The approach for an intelligent system for mechanical engineering; Chapter 7: The design elements for the specific application; Chapter. The remaining work includes Chapter 9: Software validation; chapter 6: The user interface; chapter 8: A gear unit as a specific design application; Chapter 10: Conclusion and further work; and Chapter 1: Introductionen_US
