Effectiveness of economics teaching methods in enhancing secondary school students’ learning achievement in ilala municipality, Tanzania Doris Largus Mosha MA (Education) University of Dar es Salaam, School of education, 2020 For teaching and learning to be effective, it is vital for a teacher to make use of appropriate and different teaching methods to address diverse leaners’ needs However; it remains unclear regarding which methods are effective in teaching Economics in Tanzania secondary schools. This study sought to investigate the effectiveness of economics teaching methods in enhancing secondary school students' learning achievement in Ilala Municipality. Four research objectives guided this study, namely to; Identify recommended and innovative methods that applied in the teaching of economics in secondary schools; determine the extent of use of the recommended and innovative methods for teaching economics in secondary school Determine the strengths and weaknesses of the applied economics teaching methods in enhancing students ‘learning achievement, and Determine the effectiveness of the methods applied for teaching economics in enhancing student ‘learning achievement, the study was informed by the constructivism learning theory. And the mixed-method research approach was employed to generate data guided by multiple case study design. The study involved 15 economics teachers and 258 economics students from eight secondary schools. Data were collected through interviews questionnaires, classroom observations and review of documents, and then .analyzed through content analysis and descriptive statistics, first, the findings revealed that group discussion, brainstorming, think pair and share, and study tours were tin recommended methods applied in teaching economics while plenary discussion though recommended, was never applied. Also simulation and video clips presentation were the innovative methods applied for teaching and learning, economics. Second, the findings also indicated that group discussion win used to a large extent to teach economics. Third, the findings unveiled that most of the applied methods allowed the students to participate in teaching and learning while tin major weakness of the methods was it being time consuming to the extent of hindering the completion of the syllabus in time, fourth, the findings revealed that group discussion was the most effective recommended method while video clips presentation was rated the second most effective innovative method in enhancing students learning achievement. Based on these findings, the study concludes that teaching of economics depends to a large extent on recommended methods due to lack of professional development programmers and lack of trust in teachers. As a result the nature of the students that could he captured through employment of various innovative methods is disregarded. I he study therefore, recommends training or workshops should he conducted regularly so that teachers can share their pedagogical skills and learn about the best teaching practices particularly new and innovative teaching methods that can enhance students learning. Also, teachers to be given appropriate freedom to deal with teaching through different teaching methods the students the best way they can thus come up with to enhance effective teaching.
