dc.description.abstractObservation of human rights in prisons and the treatment of inmates are issues currently on the agenda worldwide. Different organizations, academicians, religious and pressure groups on human rights and particularly on child incarceration have frequently raised concern. In Tanzania, the search for appropriate legal measures to protect children rights in conflict with the law and those in need of care have been the major concern of the government today. The suffering of children in our prisons in unbearable. The nation has witnessed many children being abused, contacting infectious diseases and even losing their lives in prisons. This work primarily describes and evaluates the treatment of children accompanying their mothers to prisons confined under the prison authority. The work does not however, address itself to conditions in police holding cells, where prisoners are generally held after arrest and prior to transfer into prison facilities. The study assesses the government’s practices with reference to the relevant provisions of international human rights treaties binding on the territory, and to other authoritative international standards, in particular the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners.en_US
