About 74% of the population in Mwanza city live in unplanned settlements. Most of these settlements have little or no access to public utilities such as the central sewerage system or solid waste collection points. The research based on qualitative approach where both primary and secondary data were collected through: interviews, focus group discussions, literature review and field observations. Analysis of the collected data and site visits revealed that, 50% get water from MWAUWASA and access it from nearby stand pipes (50%), yard connections (20%), house connections (10%) and vendors (10%). Other people use shallow wells (10%). Also, the survey and interview of Mabatini residents, local leaders and Governmental officials revealed that some of the families in the study area do not have toilets; they depend on their neighbors (30%). Of the constructed toilets in the area, 60% are traditionally made with less than 1.5m depth due to presence of rocks. Due to the challenges of sanitation experienced in the area, information was collected on willingness to pay for wastes management (sewage, solid waste etc) if infrastructures are installed. 60% of respondents agreed that they are willing to pay for such services. The results from this study support the recommendation that the use of Simplified sewerage system in Mabatini area is the solution for proper emptying of toilet contents and another wastewater that is produced.en_US
