The study aimed at measuring the awareness of casual labourers and compliance of contractors in the building construction industry on the causes of occupational injuries and illnesses and ways for its prevention. The study was conducted in Kinondoni Municipality in Dar es Salaam and sampled 10 uncompleted construction sites from which 85 workers (out of whom 81 were casuals) and 10 employers (contractors) participated as respondents (they were interviewed and filled-out questionnaires). The conceptual model was developed so as to form the basis for which the study was conceived and investigation carried-out. The model identifies manners in which various sets of factors (both core and supplementary) relate to awareness of injury and illness prevention by casual labourers in the construction industry. The study also associated this level with the effectiveness of law enforcement, training of labourers, sensitization campaigns conducted and knowledge of employers themselves on the matters. The study revealed that the level of awareness on injury and illness prevention for casual labourers in the building sector is low meaning this workforce will continue to be exposed to the occupational dangers whose substrate consequences have far reaching effects both socially and economically. The research also recommends workable solutions with a focus on creating new or involving the existing administrative and operational structures for even more effective enforcement, sensitization and accountability. On the other hand interventions need take a technological and medical dimension. This shall help improve preventive infrastructure at work places and enable victims cope well should such incidences happen.en_US
