Abstract
Commercial motorcycles and tricycles are increasingly becoming an important means of livelihood in Tanzania. The viability of commercial motorcycling in Dar es Salaam need to be investigated for livelihood sustainability of practioners. This study reported on an investigation of the viability of motorcycles for public transport in Temeke Municipality, Dar es Salaam City, Tanzania. The research was guided by the Sustainable Livelihood Approach developed by the Department For international Development. The main objective of the study was to examine the viability of motorcycles for public transport in Temeke Municipality. The study involved (106) respondents who were sampled through stratified random and purposive sampling techniques. Data collection methods were structured interview, in-depth interviews, focus group discussion and participant observation. Data analysis was done by using Quantitative and qualitative approach. The study revealed that commercial motorcycling in the study area was a viable activity due to an identifiable niche it served to both operators and passengers. However, the study revealed further that the business has been shown to be risky given the rate of accidents reported. Moreover the study revealed that motorcycles were mostly preferred to be used in morning and evening time zones. This was due to the fact that traffic congestion was dominant during these time zones. Furthermore, the study revealed that there were routes that were more preferred than others due to various factors such as high demand, security of the area, and good roads. The study therefore concluded that motorcycles had a place in Temeke Municipality transport systems. Although, motorcycle operations had many viability and safety challengers, most of them were related to the poor operating environment. The study recommends that, motorcycle operations should be facilitated and supported by relevant public authorities; and that there should be more education provision, motorcycle lane construction, operator association membership and a need for harmonized national transport policy.
