Abstract
Construction sector involves labour intensive activities. Its productivity depends on the skills and efficiency of its operatives. The study focused on assessment of the performance of vocational skilled labours in construction industry as reflected by their employers. The aim was to establish the feedback from employers taking into account that employers are the customers of the training institution. Employers’ opinions and recommendations were gathered through questionnaires with the support of interviews. This side was regarded as the demand side. On the other side, the study consulted the training institution on their records about vocational graduates who are employed in construction industry as well as the internal assessment results. The discrepancies between the two sides serve as a reflective tool for the training institution to help its students elaborate on their own strengths and weaknesses as mirrored by the perception of others thus establishing a baseline of reference points for students. Consultation with employers pointed out incompetence mainly in practical skills and a number of prominent problems were associated. It is recommended that the training institution install a new training framework with an overall and long-term vision, to build practical competency of labour at vocational level where involved agencies will play a different, but complementary role to accomplish the objective. Facilitating formal recognition of qualified trades people together with skills certification, would lay the infrastructure for upgrading skills in the industry.
