The project compared the effect of commercial lime and potassium nitrate on the plasticity swelling potential of expansive soil from Coastal area (Case study Dar es salaam) Tanzania. Laboratory tests on classification, compaction characteristics, Atterberg limits, swelling potential, chemical composition and strength in terms of CBR were done. The percentage of the stabilizers (2%, 4% and 6% of dry weight of the soil) and the curing time 97,14 and 28 days) are the variables which were considered in this study. From the laboratory tests, it was observed that potassium nitrate is not us good as lime in improving the plasticity and swelling potential of the investigated soil. The CBR strength at 95% maximum dry density of the untreated sample was increased from 6% to 20% when treated with 6% to 17% on treatment with 6% potassium nitrate and cured for 28 days. The coast per Kilometer of trunk road at current prices of potassium nitrate required to improve 150mm thick of subgrade is 100% higher than that of lime required to improve the same.en_US
