The dissertation work undertook to assess the viability of rural electrification projects through grid network extension in Tanzania. From the policy perspective, Tanzania has set targets for itself to electrify all district headquarters including all potential villages and economic zones. The researcher selected three rural electrification projects implemented by TANESCO using funds from the Rural Energy Agency namely Kilolo, Bahi and Kilindi and set out to examine the cost their financial viability. The analysis was done using a system dynamics. The researcher was also curious to know whether situations could have been better if a market development intervention component was integrated into these projects to help them become financially viable and more meaningful to the beneficiaries. Even though the three projects were not viable financially at their baseline scenario, the study results indicated that Net Present Value (NPV) increased to positive levels and Payback Periods reduced to below seven years when a market development component was included. Further the researcher underscores the need for cross-sector development planning and suggests the adoption of the market development intervention model in future rural electrification projects planning.en_US
