dc.description.abstractTreatment of sites contaminated with textile dyes using microorganisms is one of the methods which is highly recommended by various researchers in reducing environmental pollution caused by coloured effluents from textile industries. In this study, fourteen bacterial strains were isolated from Urafiki textile effluent in Dar es Salaam and screened for their ability in decolorizing synthetic textile dyes. From screening results, six bacterial strains were selected to form microbial consortium due to their efficiency in decolourization of Acid Orange II dye. The maximum decolourization efficiency of the consortium was observed at a pH range of 9 — 10 when glucose concentration of 0.5 % (w/v) and yeast extract of 0.2 % (w/v) were used as carbon and nitrogen sources respectively. However, no improvement was observed when inorganic nitrogen sources were introduced in this consortium. Through sequencing of the 16S rDNA five dye decolorizing bacteria were identified namely, Bacillus thuringiensis, Bacillus mycoides, Bacillus sp. Exiguobacterium sp. and Pseudomonas sp. These identified strains which made up the consortium were found to have potential in decolorizing common textile azo dyes. Therefore, it can be concluded that potential dye decolorizers can be found from sites contaminated with coloured textile effluents. Also, glucose and yeast extract as medium supplement were crucial for enhancing decolourization of textile azo dye for this particular consortium.en_US
