Septic tank/cesspit emptying technology exists in many urban areas of the world and has been found to be efficient when properly operated and maintained. There is however, the need to further enrich the present level of service in urban areas with more emphasis on establishing reliable tariff and maintenance of vehicles. During the questionnaire survey, data was collected from individuals and institutions for assessing the performance of vacuum tankers. Also the applicability and willingness of people to pay more for the service. Data obtained during the questionnaire survey on the septic tank/cesspit emptying service showed that the service given by the organization is not the good quality service as many expected respondents were complaining about the service. More people opt to unofficially pay road drivers to get good quality service. This perception of people indicates that they are willing to pay more than what they are paying now so as to improve the service. From the questionnaire survey and informal interview and field work results, it is believed that the present emptying service is acceptable to the communities. But the current operation and maintenance is somehow unsuitable and needs to be reviewed to address shortcomings highlighted during the study. To make the organization financially sustainable it is highly recommended to lease some of the non operational vehicles to private companies or capable individuals or making the organization operation operate on commercial basis. Commercialization of current emptying system is possible due to high demand of the service.en_US
