Abstract
A mathematical model.for the determination of beneficial floods in an open channel with an upstream reservoir is designed. The determination of the economic volume of the reservoir is also considered. Known values for beneficial floods (irrigation water) are used in the channel problem to determine the best outflow from the dam. Both the steady and unsteady flow problems are considered using the Saint-Venant continuity and momentum equations. The reservoir problem is solved using known values for the inflow, rainfall, evaporation and values for the outflow calculated in the open channel. beneficial flood problem. In particular the Stiegler's gorge dam is simulated with the Rufiji river downstream of the dam as the open channel. Results are compared with those of direct measurements and it is found that the theoretical approach offers a reliable means of obtaining results hitherto obtained using more expensive techniques. The stage-discharge relationships show good agreement with a maximum relative error of 5% when compared with result from direct measurements. A discharge of 2500 m3 S-1 is found to be the maximum which will not cause destruction downstream. The minimum capacity of the reservoir is found to be 20354.2 Mm3. This is 7,5% below the proposed volume of the Stiegler's gorge dam.
