Item An assessment of teaching and learning of speaking in ordinary level secondary schools in tanga region(University of Dar es Salaam, 2012) Kitundu, AshaThis study assessed the teaching and learning of speaking in Ordinary level secondary schools in Tanga region. The objectives of the study were to identify the extent to which speaking is taught in ordinary level, to investigate the methods of teaching and learning speaking, to explore challenges faced by students and teachers in teaching and learning of speaking and to explore views of stakeholders on the teaching and learning of speaking. The study employed a case study method in which observation, interview, focus group discussion and documentary review were used to gather data from students, teachers, Head masters/ mistress, School inspector and Municipal education officer. The study found that only few speaking topics are taught, and some of them are not exercised or practised by the students due to speaking in English problem of both students and teachers. Hence, it becomes difficult for students to practice speaking in classes as well as to fail to answer speaking questions in written form when doing exams. Also, the study revealed that the most common method used in teaching speaking was discussion method which involved a large number of students, thus only few students got a chance to practice speaking. In order to improve the teaching and learning of speaking skill in ordinary level secondary school, the study recommends that the oral exams should be introduced in ordinary level secondary schools so that teachers can teach speaking skill in classes.
