Tanzania exercised centralisation of the state since independence. In 1980’s, this system was replaced by opening up through the democratisation process. This gave a chance to civil societies to organise and to operate freely. These necessitated the need of professionalism guided by principles of profession in order to have balanced media which will insure the right to the information entitled to the people. Civil society organisations have a role to play the same to the media in bringing sustainable development. The study investigated the role of CSOs in advocating for professional ethics among media practitioners. The aim was to investigate the effectiveness and what can be the methods to strengthen the civil society organization to advocate for professional ethics of media practitioners.Three Civil Society organizations in Tanzania namely MCT, TAMWA and MISA I Tanzania were sampled for study. In those CSOs, specific objectives were to analyze the present level and factors for civil society organisations to advocate for professional ethics of media practitioners. The study finding indicated that CSOs had been doing well in advocating for professional ethics. At the same time they were still facing many problem which should be solved in order to strengthen them, especially those with advocacy character.
