Item Development of shunt active power filter with var compensation capability(University of Dar es Salaam, 2010) Msigwa, Consalva JosephThe use of semiconductor switching devices in all branches of industries as well as by the general consumers of electric energy generate harmonic currents that may cause problems to equipments and devices connected to the power supply network. This thesis attempts an in-depth analysis of harmonics currents, and how to eliminate/reduce these harmonics using Shunt Active Power Filter (SAPF). Desired controlled reference signals for Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) of the Shunt Active Power Filter (SAPF) are generated using Synchronous Reference Frame PI based controller with Anti-Windup Scheme. Pulse Width Modulation, generates the gating signals for the Voltage Source Converter (VSC). The voltage Source Converter operates to give the output signals; harmonics currents which are then injected into the power system model to cancel existing harmonics due to nonlinear loads. The Power System model with Shunt Active Power Filter was simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK software. The low order harmonics mainly, 5th, 7th, and 11th were used to test the proposed Shunt Active Power Filter. The simulation results show that the THD before active filtering is 12.45%, and the THD after compensation using SAPF without anti-windup scheme is 4.40% and after active filtering using SAPF with anti-windup scheme is 3.87%. The performance of Shunt Active Power Filter with anti-windup scheme was better than the one without anti-windup scheme, but both gave acceptable values of Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) within the level set by standard such as IEEE-519 of 5% for the supply current. Following discoveries in this research, the main recommendation on how to reduce harmonic currents includes performing the active filtering e.g., the installation of Active Power Filters (APF).
