Comparison of Two Different Bush clearing Polices or Kongwa Ranch
(University of Dar es Salaam, 1975) mshana, Lushino J
Today rapid changes in ranching development are taking place in many developing countries. In Tanzania cattle population is about 9.2 million, the second biggest cattle population in Africa; Ethiopia taking the first place. Now the government is keener on general livestock industry as a whole than before. More commercial ranches are being established while at the same time endeavor to improve the traditional herd continues. All in all, due to uneven distribution of cattle in the country some areas are required to support more cattle than is desirable and in the dry season cattle concentrate around the limited water resources producing overgrazing; and trampling and erosion is occurring. In some commercial ranches, poor planning and mismanagement are causing problems of overgrazing or poor financial result. This thesis prepared at the request of the former Chief Development Officer. National agricultural Co. Ltd., (NACO) the National Organization which deals with commercial ranching. NACO has experienced the problem of bush regeneration which in some ranches caused over grazing. The alternatives are to destock the ranch to its relevant 'carrying capacity' or to clear more land to increase grazing capacity. Mr. Pease, the former Chief Development Officer emphasized that a study should be made on the economic benefit of bush clearing. The thesis gives comparison of two different bush clearing policies on Kongwa Ranch. The two alternatives are compared by discounting the relevant costs and benefit over a 20 year time period. The methodology could be useful to other ranches or organizations.
