Auxiliary verbs in Kiswahili verbal patterns
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2003) Yohana, Rafiki
This dissertation has been built upon the study of Kiswahili constructions with verbal sequences among which one or several may be auxiliary verbs. This study works with the premise that when there is a sequence of verbs in Kiswahili sentence, the first verb is the traditional auxiliary verb followed by the traditional main verb. So this study looks at the reality of this premise by applying the analyses of Transformational Grammar (TG) in the analysis of such constructions compare to English Language constructions with the auxiliary verbs. This study is organized into five chapters. Chapter One is an introduction to this study by providing the background information to the study, comprised of statement of the problem, literature review, theoretical framework, expected findings, objectives and significance of the study, data collected as well as organisation of the study. Chapter Two gives the analyses of general characteristics of Kiswahili constructions with auxiliary verb. The analysis generally specifies the morphological, syntactic, semantic and lexical characteristics of such constructions in Kiswahili. Chapter Three focuses on one of the aspects identified in chapter two, namely, the morphological aspect of the Kiswahili data for detailed treatment. Chapter Four looks at the syntactic aspects of the Kiswahili constructions with auxiliary verb in connection to the Transformational Grammar framework while Chapter Five gives a summary, a conclusion with recommendations that have implication to theoretical framework as well as proposal for further studies.
