Item Applicability of value engineering during product development in manufacturing industries in Tanzania(University of Dar es Salaam, 2015) Yamo, Samwel ChristopherThere is an increased interest in manufacturing industries in the application of value engineering during product development worldwide due to increased competition between the manufacturers on a global scale and the need for companies to control costs in all areas and stages in order to remain competitive and effective. However developing countries like Tanzania, application of value engineering is still primitive, compared to what is done elsewhere. This study has investigated the applicability of value engineering in manufacturing industries in Tanzania. More specifically the research assessed the value engineering measures used in Tanzania manufacturing industries during product development, its extent of applicability and the barriers hindering its effective implementation. Recommendations were then made for its effective implementation in Tanzania. This study utilized both qualitative and quantitative research approaches. Data were collected through questionnaire and interview with total of 32 respondents. The data were analyzed by using statistical package for social science (SPSS). The results show that the level of application of value engineering of the employees in manufacturing industries in Tanzania ranges from low to moderate. The type of value engineering that is done is based on cost and time only. The main barriers of value engineering are; inadequate resources, no support for their use, lack of company accountability, little knowledge by the management on value engineering and lack of a system in place for value engineering. To respond to that situation a value engineering guideline was developed by the researcher that is recommended for use for effective application of value engineering.
