An analysis of risk management practices of sports organisations in Tanzania.
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2002) Wilson, Eliwaja
The purpose of this study was to investigate the risk management practices undertaken by sports organisations in Tanzania. The variables investigated were risk management procedures such as provision of medical services, safe facilities and equipment, and insurance coverage. The sample for the study involved 35 respondents from five (5) sports organisations located in Dar es Salaam, 2 lawyers and 2 insurance representatives. The main instrument for data collection was a questionnaire. An interview, observation and documentary review were used to augment the data obtained through the questionnaire. Quantitative data collected was analysed by computer using the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). Data which could not be quantified was subjected to thematic analysis. The results show that athletes involved in sports programmes were inadequately examined by their sports organisations; injured athletes during sports programmes were poorly handled by sports organisations with respect to legal knowledge, with exception of the national teams. The results also show that sports personnel and athletes in Tanzania were not aware of the legal rights related to injured athletes. Finally results show that athletes had not taken any insurance policies. The conclusion drawn from the findings were; sports organisations in Tanzania provide inadequate risk management procedures to their athletes such as medical examinations, handling of injuries, insurance coverage and supervision. Both sports personnel and athletes lack legal knowledge related to injuries in sports programmes. From the findings the following recommendations were made: One, the government of Tanzania needs to have qualified sports personnel who will be equipped with- skills through sports training courses. Two, sport administrators, athletes and other sports.
