Managing land resources at household level for undertaking economic activities in Tanzania.
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2016) William, Rehema
This study sought to investigate the pattern of managing land resources at household level for undertaking economic activities in Dodoma Peri urban. The objectives of the study were; to explore the conditions under which women and men use land for undertaking activities at household level; to analyze the extent of marginalization of women and men in using land and draw policy implication emerging from the research findings. The study adopted both qualitative and quantitative approaches. Mbabala, Mpunguzi and Zuzu were selected as representative wards for the study. The sample size was selected by both random and purposive sampling. Primary data were collected through interviews, questionnaire, Focus Group Discussion and Photos while secondary data were obtained through documentary review of published and unpublished materials. Analysis of the data was done using the statistical package for Social Sciences (SPSS) programme version 16.0, through simple statistical methods such as cross tabulations, chi-square, binomial distribution, tables, and percentages. Qualitative data were analyzed through a thematic content analysis (TCA). The findings indicated that age was the main condition which influenced the use of land for activities undertaken by women and men. In Zuzu ward, there was no big difference between women and men in using land for carrying out activities, while in Mpunguzi land was dominated by men, and in Mbabala women were favored in the issue of land allocation. Many women engage in unskilled activities such as land preparation, transporting food stuff from farms to home and weeding, compared to men. There was low level of awareness among the respondents on land laws and policies which stipulate land equality. The study concludes that the denial of women to own land and the unskilled activities they engage in contribute to poverty to the households. The study recommends that: Local Government leaders should raise awareness of the villagers on Land Laws, National Gender Policy and National Land Policy in order to eliminate women marginalization. Dodoma Municipality should give awareness on the value of land to the villagers. This will help women to engage in skilled activities.
