Land rights and land investment in Tanzania: toward addressing fears, concerns and challenges on land matters

This study aimed to examine the state of land rights and land investments in Tanzania by focusing on fears, concerns and challenges arising from large scale land investments in Tanzania. Specifically, the study aimed to analyse land rights as provided under the international instruments and its application in Tanzania and analyse land investment in Tanzania in relation to land rights. The methodology used to conduct this study was case study research and involved the use of various data collection methods and tools such as library research and interviews. The study shows different violations of land rights in land investment in Tanzania and recommends that if the current situation of violating land rights through investment on land will persist if steps to eliminate the same will not be taken by the Government of Tanzania. The study recommends adoption of a country wide land use plan, the acquisition by the government of hoarded and underutilized land held by investors and redistribute it to citizens or foreign investors who can put it to immediate and sustainable use.
