Statistical analysis of factors affecting contraceptive use among women: a case study of women of reproductive age in Temeke municipal
(University of Dar es Salaam, 2012) Vicent, Marystella
This study is an attempt to examine factors affecting contraceptive use among women in Temeke municipality, Dar es Salaam region. The study employs binary logistic regression model to examine the determinants of contraceptive use among women aged 15 to 49 years. The empirical findings reveal that, education level of women, spousal communication and knowledge on whether or not a woman can become pregnant while using contraceptive methods were statistically significant in explaining use of contraceptive methods among women in Temeke municipality. The study also shows that most of the women aged 20 years and above in the study area had heard about GREEN STAR compared to women aged below 20 years; and majority (67.1%) of women understood the meaning of the GREEN STAR. Types of contraceptive methods known by most of the women in the study area were oral pills, injections and condoms. Diaphragm, Spermicide, Periodic Abstinence and Withdrawal were used by few women. In practice, the most common contraceptive method used by women in study area was injection followed by oral pills. Other contraceptive methods like IUD, Spermicide and Withdrawal were used by few women. No women were using Diaphragm, Periodic Abstinence. Moreover, the most barrier of the use of contraceptive methods mentioned by women was health hazard barriers which were side effects of contraceptive methods. Other barriers were religion, need for pregnancy and partner objection on use of contraceptive methods. Distance to contraceptive service was not the barrier for this particular study because majority of women were getting services to nearby distance.
